An ode to women, is how you could describe the works of Anick de Rouw. We are therefore very proud that we were able to create a collection with Anick with Wandkraft.
With her portraits of women, Anick mainly puts the woman in the spotlight. All the portraits she makes are meant as an ode to the woman in all her forms. You could say that these portraits also reflect her own personal journey. It exposes the search for her own femininity and sensuality and as she paints, these concepts gain more and more meaning.
The idea of 'the perfect picture' and that women have to conform to that has been an unconscious guideline for a long time. Especially the unconscious belief that you are only seen and appreciated as a woman when you look a certain way. Through much self-examination and also exploring this in her art has ensured a much broader image of beauty. It can be sexy and beautiful, but also wild and imperfect and everything in between. Beauty has many faces.
Anick mainly uses acrylic ink for her portraits in which the love for earthy color tones is very big. In addition, she sometimes uses bright colors to create a nice contrast with the earth tones that often form the basis of the portrait. For this she uses acrylic paint, sometimes acrylic ink or a crackle paste.
The technique she uses is one she has developed over the years. She works with a lot of water to build up the ink in layers. It is always adding and removing ink. It is really a build-up of many layers to create shadows, but also beautiful color tones are created that the ink releases. These are always the gifts that cannot be planned but that make the work come alive.
Anick is a self-taught artist and has been working as an artist for herself since 2017. After HAVO, she successfully completed an interior design course and then spent another year at the photography academy. In the end, both professions turned out not to be the love she had hoped for and she returned to her old love of 'drawing and painting.
